Stress Testing in Canberra - Find Out If Your Heart Is Getting Enough Blood
If chest pain, breathlessness, or fatigue only shows up when you’re active, a resting test won’t catch it. A stress test will.
Capital Heart & Vascular Centre provides exercise and pharmacological stress testing — including stress echocardiography for patients across Canberra and the ACT. It’s one of the most effective ways to detect coronary artery disease before it becomes a heart attack.
What a Stress Test Tells You
A stress test puts your heart under controlled exertion on a treadmill, or with medication if you can’t exercise while we monitor your ECG, blood pressure, and (with stress echo) live ultrasound images of your heart muscle.
This reveals what a resting test can miss:
- Whether narrowed coronary arteries are restricting blood flow during activity
- Where the blockage is likely located, guiding what happens next
- Whether your chest pain or breathlessness is cardiac in origin or something else
- Your safe level of exertion before surgery or starting a new exercise program
Two Ways We Test, Matched to You
Exercise Stress Echo
For patients who can walk or cycle. Combines a treadmill test with before-and-after ultrasound imaging for the most detailed picture of how your heart performs under load.
Pharmacological Stress Test
For patients who can’t exercise adequately due to joint problems, breathlessness, or other limitations. A medication safely mimics the effect of exercise on your heart instead.
Your cardiologist will recommend the right option; you don’t need to decide in advance.
Who Needs a Stress Test
- Chest pain or tightness that comes on with activity
- Breathlessness that’s worse on exertion
- An abnormal or borderline resting ECG
- Risk factors for coronary artery disease (smoking, diabetes, high cholesterol, family history) and no prior cardiac assessment
- Pre-operative cardiac clearance before major surgery
- Monitoring after a previous stent or bypass procedure
What to Expect
- Takes around 30 to 45 minutes start to finish
- Performed on-site in Canberra, supervised throughout by your cardiologist
- Results discussed with you the same day in most cases
- A full report sent to your GP
On the day
Wear comfortable clothes and walking shoes, avoid caffeine for 24 hours beforehand, and have a light meal a few hours prior (not immediately before).
